About the Book

Smokey's Big Adventure

Smokey's Big Adventure is an intermediate level, illustrated chapter book that children of all ages will love to read and listen to. It was written especially for young (5-8 yrs) readers who are reading above grade level. The interest level is high and there's plenty of humor so young ones being read to and older kids reading at grade level will love it too.

Smokey is a giant fluff ball of a puppy that gets off his line one day and heads off with his big brother, Bandit, to explore the vast farm on which they live. In the process, Smokey and Bandit have a great deal of fun, some big laughs, a few scares and a grand adventure.

Smokey also discovers the name for a feeling he's had ever since he came to the farm. As Smokey describes it, "It’s a big feeling too….. I don’t know the right word but it's a safe and warm and happy feeling!" I hope that as you read Smokey's Big Adventure you recognize that big feeling he's talking about. It's the best feeling in the world!

It's my hope that the Smokey Adventures will become a series of books following the themes presented in Galatians 5:22-23, character traits known as the Fruit of the Spirit. They are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

About Me

About Me

Martha Henss Book Author

Hi! I'm so very glad you are visiting my website! Let me share a little bit about myself so that you can get to know the author behind my upcoming book!

My given name is Martha but I also answer to Muffy (the name I'm called by my childhood friends, sisters, nieces and nephews) and Gigi (to my grandkids.) I was born and raised in Central Illinois, USA and still live there with my husband of 42 years. We have three children, six grandchildren, two dogs and five grand-dogs!

My hobbies are reading and creating. I love to refinish and refurbish furniture (especially "just right" sized chairs for my grandkids), cross-stitch a portrait of a loved one, build

a dollhouse or a playhouse, paint a ceramic nativity scene or write a book! I believe my creative nature is a gifting from God and feel led to share my gifts in order to honor Him.

I am a retired elementary school teacher and I love finding a book that's too good to put down. Over the years, I've had several book ideas running through my head and even onto paper but never had the courage to try to publish one.

Until now, that is! Smokey's Big Adventure was inspired by a real dog on a real farm in Arkansas. I'm so excited to share his story with kids and grownups who like a wholesome story inspired by a really lovable pup. You can read about the real Smokey and Bandit below.

The Real Smokey and Bandit

The Real Smokey and Bandit

As you can see from the photos below, Smokey and his dog brother Bandit are real dogs who are as cute as their illustrations in the book. They are owned by my daughter's family and live on the family farm in Arkansas.

Bandit joined the family first. He was a "walk on" to the farm. A neighbor found him as a puppy; sadly, someone had left him by the road. My daughter's family took him in, fed him some good food, got him some medical attention and gave him lots of love. He has been the boss of the farm ever since. He runs free on the farm and loves to hunt at night but always comes back home to the cabin in the woods. As you can probably guess, Bandit is part Labrador and part Rottweiller. He's got all the playfulness, gentleness and goofiness of a Lab and the devotion, confidence and courage of a Rottweiler.

My daughter and her husband purchased Smokey as a Christmas gift for their five children. He is the writer of the book...I just helped out a bit ;) Smokey started off his life on a long line tied to the front porch of the cabin where he dreamed of life off the leash. Smokey is half Great Pyrenees and half Anatolian Shepherd. As a puppy he was an adorable, roly-poly ball of fluff. Like a Pyrennes, he's very affectionate and gentle but also strong willed and fearless. The Anatolian Shepherd in Smokey makes him independent and proud.

It took a bit of time for the two dogs get to know one another but once they did they became loyal brothers just like in the story. Now they're older; they both have the run of the farm; and they stick together like best buddies.
